Class Session: Mondays, April 20 + 27 - 10:30am-1pm

Learn free-motion techniques in this brand-new class with instructor Pat Cullen!  If you're tired of being limited to quilting straight lines on your projects, this class is for you!

What is Free-Motion Quilting?

  • Free-motion is a quilting technique in which the sewing machine feed dogs are dropped, allowing you to freely move the fabric around to create an unlimited number of quilting designs and motifs.

In the first class, students will learn four free-motion quilting techniques:

  • vertical + horizontal lines technique
  • stipple technique
  • meander technique
  • writing your name in cursive - this combines the stipple + meander technique

For the first class, students must bring a (2) 12" square quilt sandwiches (fabric + batting + backing fabric) already assembled. These should be made with solid or tone-on-tone fabrics.  Also bring 2 spools of thread in colors that contrast your quilt sandwich fabrics.

In the second class, students will build on the foundations learned in the first class, while also learning two more free-motion quilting techniques:

  • stitch in-the-ditch
  • outlining large prints

For the second class, students must bring (1) quilt sandwich made with an "orphan block" - this is any quilt block you have made that is at least 8" square.  Also bring a quilt sandwich made with any fat quarter that has a large print on it. The backing of this quilt sandwich should be solid or tone-on-tone.

This class is suitable for intermediate level quilters. Prior free-motion experience is not required! Students must be able to confidently thread and operate a sewing machine independently.

Important Note: Students will be working on our Skyline machines in the studio. Students are not permitted to bring their own machine.

Required Materials - first class:

  • (2) quilt sandwiches, 12" square each, using solid or tone-on-tone fabric
  • (2) spools of contrasting thread - the thread colors should be opposite of the fabric colors in your quilt block

Required Materials - second class:

  • (1) quilt sandwich made with a pieced orphan block - must be 8" square or larger
  • (1) quilt sandwich made from a fat quarter with large print on it
  • (2) spools of contrasting thread
