Make a skirt pattern to fit YOUR body that you can use over and over again!

In this class, students will learn how to draft and sew a skirt with invisible zipper.   Students will learn how to properly take their measurements, use them to draft a flat pattern, create the needed pattern pieces, create a muslin sample, then sew the garment to completion.

Students have the option of making a lined or unlined pencil skirt or A-line skirt to whatever length desired.  Skills learned in this class include using a serger to finish the seams, inserting an invisible zipper, sewing an elastic waistband or facing, and sewing darts.

Graduates of our Garment 101 or Intro to Pattern Drafting 101 classes are encouraged to register for this class. Prior garment sewing experience is required for all students - ideally, you have already sewn an outfit to completion prior to registering for this class. Students must be able to confidently thread and operate a sewing machine independently and should be comfortable using a rotary cutter.

Important Notes:

  • Students must wear or bring to class leggings or tight pants on the first day of class - this is essential for taking the most accurate body measurements!
  • The first class is 2.5 hours long (10:30am-1pm); remaining classes are 2 hours each (10:30am-12:30pm).

Required Materials:

  • 2-1/2 yds of Pellon 830 Blank Tracing Fabric
  • (1) Pattern Making Master Kit - this kit includes all of the rulers that you will need for this project (clear ruler, hop curve ruler, and French curve ruler)
  • measuring tape
  • 3 yds of 1/4" elastic or 1/2" elastic for waistband
  • Mid-weight, woven fabrics* - see note below
  • Interfacing* - see note below
    • Fabric and interfacing amounts will be determined in the first class AFTER you have drafted your pattern pieces. Please wait until after the first class to purchase your fabric and interfacing.

Recommended Fabrics:

  • We suggest using mid-weight, woven fabrics such as denim or linen/linen blend.  NO KNIT FABRICS please.
  • As with all of our garment classes, we recommend that students PRE-WASH their fabric before returning back to the second class.
