In this 4-week course, students will learn the art of garment making! Students will make a complete outfit using the Cielo Top pattern by Closet Core and the Emerson Pant pattern by True Bias.  This class is suitable for beginner sewists who have completed our Sewing 101 class or have an equivalent skill level.

The Cielo Top has two options - a basic cuffed short sleeve or a dramatic gathered long sleeve.  The Emerson Pant is a pull-on crop pant with an elasticized back and a flat front waistband.

Our instructor will systematically walk you through the foundations starting with a deep dive into all things pattern, how to read the instruction envelope and the pattern itself. You will learn how to take your measurements, choose a size and make pattern modifications. We will discuss choosing the best fabric for your projects and work through preparing the fabric, pattern tracing and cutting out your pattern.

During this series, we'll start with the Cielo Top, teaching students how to professionally sew a neck facing, how to make gathered sleeves, how to sew darts and how to hem.  When making the Emerson Pant, students will learn to make pockets, pleats, and how to work with elastic. Students will not only receive instruction on these steps but will have sufficient time during the class to work on and master these skills under the guidance of the instructor.

This class is suitable for beginner level students who can confidently thread and operate a sewing machine.  If you have no sewing experience, please take our Sewing 101 class first before registering for this class.

Please Note: This course is designed with enough work time that you should be able to finish the garments, but there may be homework to finish within the course time frames. You're always welcome to bring your project into one of our Garment Labs to continue working on it in the studio.

Required Materials:

**PDF Pattern Note - Cielo Top and/or Emerson Pants - CURVE SIZES: If you are purchasing the Cielo Top (Curve Sizes 14-32) or the Emerson Pants (Curve Sizes 14-32) directly from the pattern company, please download and print out the instructions and bring them to class with you. Additionally, you must either print and assemble the PDF pattern on your own BEFORE attending the first class, OR we can provide you with a wide-scale printed version for $12.95 (per pattern). Please email classes@urbansewciety.com AT LEAST (1) week in advance of the class to indicate that you have purchased the PDF pattern and would like for us to provide you with a wide-format printed copy.  We will charge you for the printing fee when you pick it up.

Recommended Fabric

  • for the Cielo Top: linen, chambray
  • for the Emerson Pant:  linen, cotton, chambray, and rayon
  • Fabric yardage depends on the size of garment being made; please refer to the pattern for accurate measurements. You may purchase these materials after the first class, after you've been measured by the instructor.
