Interested in learning how to sew but not sure where to start? Join us for our Sewing 101 Intensive class - a 6-week intro level class where you will learn how to sew by making (3) individual projects. By the end of the series, you will have confidence in using a sewing machine independently, and will have gained a wealth of sewing knowledge!

To start off class, you will learn how to operate the sewing machine. We use Janome Sewist 740DC machines in our classroom - a great machine built for beginners and experienced sewists alike! During the first portion of the class, your instructor will demonstrate how to operate the sewing machine, how to wind a bobbin, and how to thread the machine. After you've prepared your machine correctly, you will test your sewing skills on small samples of fabric to familiarize yourself with stitching, the foot pedal and different speeds the machine offers.  You will also learn common terminology and techniques, including practicing seam allowance, backstitching, cutting, pinning, and how to rip seams if needed.

Class will be broken down into three small projects:

  • First Project: Lined Drawstring Cinch Bag
    • Skills learned: how to read a pattern, how to cut out fabric, how to pin, seam ripping, sewing straight lines
  • Second Project: (2) Zipper Pouches
    • Skills learned: bag construction, sewing with zippers, making boxed corners
  • Third Project: Pajama Pants
    • Skills learned: garment construction, taking accurate sizing measurements, sewing with elastic, sewing a pocket

This class is perfect for the following students:

  • You've never sewn before and are interested in getting started
  • You have sewn in the past, but need a refresher course to get up to speed

Important Notes:

  • You will only need to purchase the materials for the first project for the first class.  You can purchase your materials for the other projects later in the session.  Your instructor will keep you updated when you are moving on to the next project and when to purchase your materials for it.
  • Students must purchase their fabric and materials in our shop to ensure you have the appropriate items for each project.
  • Please arrive to class on time.  Students arriving late will not be permitted into the classroom.
  • If you plan on shopping for materials on the day of class, please plan to arrive to the shop at least 30 minutes in advance to ensure that you have enough time to browse through our fabric collections and purchase your materials before heading upstairs to our sewing studio.
