Transform a basic crewneck sweatshirt into a one-of-a-kind wearable piece of art in this new Upcycled Crewneck: Hexie Flower Cardigan class! In this intermediate, hands-on sewing class, you will transform a classic crewneck sweatshirt into a stylish, open-front cardigan with appliqued hexies.
Students can choose between (3) views for their desired look:
- View 1: Scrappy - use your favorite scrap fabrics to create scrappy, patchwork styled hexie flowers
- View 2: (4) or (8)-color - choose (4) or (8) coordinating fabrics - if you choose (4) you will have (2) of each hexie flower, totaling (8) flowers; if you choose (8) then you will have (8) identical hexie flowers
- View 3: Single Color - choose (2) coordinating fabrics, 1 fabric for the hexie flower petals and 1 fabric for the hexie flower center
In this class, you will learn how to cut hexagons with a ruler, assemble the flowers using Y-seams, the pressing pinwheel technique, how to execute applique stitching with the sewing machine, and double find binding.
Students must be comfortable using a rotary cutter and must be able to confidently thread and operate a sewing machine independently.
Required Materials:
- (1) PRE-WASHED crewneck of your choosing (no hoodies!)
- quilting cotton fabric for hexies - see yardage breakdown below depending on your desired look:
- (1) spool of sew-all thread
- (1) spool of top stitch thread
Fabric Requirements - Scrappy Version:
- Petals: (48) 5" x 5" squares
- Center of flowers: (8) 5" x 5" squares
- Or, you can purchase (2) 5" charm packs for the petals and centers, but you will have left over squares
- Binding: 1/8 yard of quilting cotton
Fabric Requirements - 4-Color Version:
- Petals: (4) fat quarters - you will get (2) hexie flowers per fat quarter
- Center of flowers: (1) fat quarter
- Binding: 1/8 yard of quilting cotton

- Petals: (8) coordinating fat quarters
- Center of flowers: (1) fat quarter
- Binding: 1/8 yard of quilting cotton
